The Youth Sexual Health Core Team Retreat will be held May 1-3, 2009. The Youth Sexual Health Core Team will be made up of youth and adults working in partnership. We will lay a foundation for a new direction for the provincial youth sexual health strategy to ensure that it is rooted in and responsive to the changing needs of youth.
This is an amazing opportunity to contribute to youth sexual health in Nova Scotia. It is not an information session on youth sexual health Issues.
The Department of Health Promotion and Protection (HPP) is committed to improving youth sexual health outcomes in Nova Scotia and to implementing the youth sexual health strategy. HPP is pleased to be sponsoring the Youth Sexual Health Core Team Retreat.
The facilitators for the gathering will be Andrew Abraham, Lisa Dulong, Sarah Maclaren and Tim Merry.
The provincial youth sexual health strategy, Framework for Action: Youth Sexual Health in Nova Scotia was released a couple of years ago by the Nova Scotia Roundtable on Youth Sexual Health and some initial implementation activities were started. Youth involvement and participation are a key component of the strategy, but to date, meaningful youth involvement has not happened. So, we've let go of our old structure and we are building something new. The Youth Sexual Health Core Team will lead the new direction.

The core team will design, carry out, make visible and sustain the energy of this work.
It is through the work and motivation of the core team that this process will be a success. This is an enjoyable process and will require a core team dedicated to getting the work done. The core team comprises youth and adults working together - one that is able to make its own decisions and be accountable for outcomes.
What's the commitment?
There will be a half day meeting every month of the core team following this retreat. The amount of activity in the project will rise and fall depending on what we are doing (e.g. retreat, training, follow up on actions) - you can expect 1-2 days a month in addition to the half day meeting over a 6 - 9 month period. You will be able to decide your own level of commitment.
